Stickler, defunto da pochi anni, inizia le sole settanta, ma fittissime, pagine del suo libro, (Il celibato ecclesiastico. Storia e fondamenti, Libreria Editrice Vaticana) precisando: “Siamo abituati a parlare di celibato, cioè di rinuncia al matrimonio da parte dei candidati al sacerdozio. In realtà, bisognerebbe usare il termine più ampio di continenza”. La continenza, cioè, da osservare non solo rinunciando al matrimonio, ma anche non usando di esso se già sposati. In effetti, nella Chiesa antica, la maggioranza del clero era composta di uomini maturi -i viri probati- che, col consenso della moglie, accedevano agli Ordini Sacri lasciando la famiglia, alle cui necessità materiali provvedeva la comunità dei credenti.
Ebbene, capita spesso di leggere, anche in autori seri, che l’obbligo di questo abbandono della consorte, con l’impegno conseguente della continenza perfetta, sarebbe stato deciso solo verso il 300 al Concilio, o meglio sinodo, di Elvira, in Spagna .
Altri, come Romano (lo abbiamo visto) datano quell’obbligo addirittura al 1139.
Ebbene, nel canone 33 degli atti di Elvira si legge: “I Padri sinodali sono d’accordo sul divieto completo, per tutti i chierici impegnati nel servizio dell’altare, di astenersi dalle loro mogli e non generare figli. Chi ha fatto questo deve essere escluso dallo stato clericale”. Commenta Stickler: “Non si tratta, come si vede, di una disposizione nuova.
